Hello,
Great race! Just wondering if there will be any further results posted for the overall omnium. I finished with 3 points in Cat 3 men and was just wondering if anything outside of the top 3 will be posted. Thanks.

Points system is not fair. Hope next year they do regular GC… that means times, not points.
Awesome event! My compliments to race coordinator, Sean, and his committee. Very well organized and professionally executed. Will undoubtedly be in the running for Cycling B.C.’s ” Race of the Year “.
I agree. Points is not a fair system, and a lazy way for placings. Next year it should be by time. Great race, though. Awsome course, all three stages were great!
Thank you all for taking the time to leave some feedback on the race. We are always looking for ways to improve for the next year. Could the two people who commented on the points system please expand upon their comments and provide some further detail on why they feel it is unfair?
I’m in agreement that a points system is not a fair way of scoring a stage race. A rider who is consistent in all events , say finishing 6th in the bunch sprint in the Crit, 4th in the time trial and 8th in the road race with the same time as the winner after being being in a small group at the end of the road race with 90% of the field dropped. This rider would end up with 2 points total out of all the three races. This is not very representative of this riders strength or skill level. Another rider could also get 2 points by being last in the Time Trial, dopping out of the road Race and finishing 4th in th Crit. Not Fair.
The fact that it has taken Cycling BC almost a week to get results of the road race out is absolutely ridiculous. It does not take that long to get results finalized. Go to any well organized road race and the results are most likely posted that evening with more than 100 riders in every category. Cycling BC is a joke and the racing in BC suffers because of it.
About the points system, from what I can see there were a couple of people who did not finish the Road Race, who still aquired a GC. Again, not fair. NEXT YEAR no points, and time by GC!!!
Nice to see CyclingBC send out an email stating the K-Town classic results are available, yet they haven’t even completed the RR results yet. It’s been almost a week … how hard can this really be (esp. with camera assistance)? What are we paying them for?
The points system is what it is. The rules were clear at the outset. Until you have organized a race it is hard to understand how much more difficult GC times end up being. Participants want instant, accurate results and the point system is quicker. As for the onmium, perhaps going a bit deeper in the points (to 10 places) may make things better. As well, like any stage race, riders should have to compete and complete all stages.

How hard can times be? After the TT they were all there. After the Crit add those times (yes… same time (ST) for a group – insentive to say with the pack). After the Road Race, add those times. This should equal the overall times. What’s the big deal?
AND… if I was to pick two things that are wrong about the Onmium it would be points should be deeper, and if you don’t finish an event, you don’t get a GC.
Don’t want to rant too much… still a great event. We’re fortunate to have it regardless.
So I’ve been reading the comments as I too await the full road race results. As a participant competing in my first race event, with a competitive background in another sport (squash) as a basis for comparison, I feel that my point of view is reasonably objective. I agree that this was a great event and I had a lot of fun, learned plenty and felt safe while I was riding. It seems most of our criticism targets the governing body and not individual events. The race licensing system is somewhat confusing and I didn’t realize until after this weekend that without the race license I wouldn’t be eligible to collect points — nor can I pick them up retroactively (regulatory bodies should be held accountable for their policies and provide solid reasons for them…I see no good reason for this particular one) I think all race organizers should include clear notes for newbies as this kind of experience could leave a bad taste and influence future decisions to participate. On that note, I would have to agree that ranking or points systems that don’t reward participation and completion of events tend to leave too many out in the cold. The most important element to the success of any competitive sport is nurturing the grass roots body — the masses who fork out the time and money…those of us non-sponsored riders who pay to play, and watch, for that matter. I have found that in squash there are similar flaws in terms of rewarding participation and some consistent results. Too often it seems the people installed to run these systems are out of touch with what it’s like to sacrifice time, money and a lot of energy traveling to various events. If a new participant isn’t impressed with their early experiences, there’s an increased risk of losing their interest and respect. I was impressed with this event overall; however, I am dismayed that category 5 riders get no recognition although I would suggest that our relative efforts are equal to or greater than those ‘elite’ riders who are finishing at the top. It’s equally troubling to see that letting us know the results of our efforts is of low priority. I think I finished pretty well among the cat. 5 men but I have no really solid idea; as a newbie it’s very confusing and difficult to tell who you should even be trying to chase down out of the pack ahead of you, let alone know how many people from your own category might have finished ahead of you. In terms of meaningful results — placement means exceedingly little outside the top few riders while time is a true relative measure of where you fit in and how you’re doing from race-to-race.
Having made some criticisms, let me simply acknowledge that through my experience with Squash BC (having come from Ontario), challenges with points etc. are certainly not unique to cycling. My whining about rankings have fallen on the deaf ears of Squash BC administration for years now. Their ranking system absolutely encourages you not to play more events as your ranking is then protected. How does this grab ya: you could beat the world #1 squash player in the first round and get ’0′ credit for it (since he happens to be from Egypt and not a Squash BC member !), make it all the way to the final and be heavily penalized for losing there and suffer a very serious net loss in ranking points all despite actually playing well and getting a good result. It’s not sane but as I said, the old folks who run these things are out of touch and don’t like to change things. Just keep speaking out in a constructive way…and play/ride, do it to the best of your ability and have fun — don’t let something lame take away the sheer enjoyment of it all.

I have to agree with the comments above regarding the delay in results. I have competed in events in several provinces and states and consistently find the manner and timing of results reported in BC to be well below the mark.
I understand that this is not the most effective forum to make the comment, but hopefully someone at CyclingBC looks at this page and understands that this is not a frustration felt by just a handful of riders.
As licence holders, we contribute a significant amount of money to uphold a racing infrastructure that we expect to be comparable to that of other areas. More importantly, if we want to attract riders from other areas to our races, we are shooting ourselves in the foot by providing this sub-standard level of organization.
It has been five days since the road race and we have no results. Over five years of road racing, I have only participated in one non-BC race where the results were posted in more than 48 hours, and in that race, the finish camera had broken. I should also note that, in that case, the provincial cycling body had the courtesy to communicate the reasons for the delay in a timely manner.
Based on my conversations with other riders and the comments that I’ve read above, it’s nice to see that I’m not alone in my frustration.
Oh I forgot to mention, other than the whacky points system, AWESOME event guys!! Thanks very much for all your time and efforts to keeping a cycling BC stage race in Kelowna! All the out of towners I spoke to loved it.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the omnium points system versus time for GC. It is definitely food for thought for next year.
As far as the RR results go, that is not an easy task and the most difficult of all the events to sort out. The photo finish camera system is not fool proof and still requires a lot of manual investigation once the race is finished as rider numbers are not always clear and we often get riders crossing the line in ones and twos. This leaves a big puzzle for the officials to put together at the end. There are a number of other factors in play here as well when it comes to placing riders. Please review the information just posted on the Cycling BC website regarding registration, number placement, sign-on and DNF procedures. Trying to place even a small number of racers after the road race can take a great deal of time and effort. Thanks again to all the racers and we hope to see you here next year!
I really enjoyed being a part of this event and I’m already looking forward to it next year. The crit was the highlight for me and it’s great to see it return to a downtown location. I hope you can keep the same course next year, but I felt we needed a little more protection from traffic on the second corner (Raymer/Richter), as cones got hit a couple of times in the Cat.4/5 race, and if there were crashes there, as we saw on the forth corner a couple of times, riders would be sliding into north-bound traffic on Richter Street. It’s a fast and exciting crit!
I agree with the other comments regarding points/times. I like many others suffered in the road race. It is a tough course and there’s nothing wrong with that, but the pace in the Cat 4/5/Masters race was very quick this year. A lot of riders were dropped, and again nothing wrong with that, but if you are only looking at a few points shared among the leaders and no times given, there is less motivation to finish. How many DNF’s did we have? 60% or so? It’s a wonderful race, but one way to improve it would be to time the GC. Thanks again to Kelowna Cycle and all the organisers.
Still no RR results…
Four things: first, I just wanted to make sure that kudos and thanks were given to the volunteers – they did a great job, and as a racer, I really appreciate their coming out and helping at this event.
Second, overall, the weekend was a really good race experience; the TT and Crit were fun, and unlike some other events I’ve attended, the RR really felt like racing – I loved the course. It required you to be fit to hang with the pack, but also have some technical bike handling skills to deal with the descents and turns. The winner couldn’t just sit back and wait for the loops to count down – there were some attacks, etc. I am an out-of-towner, and I will definitely come back next year to this event.
Third, I too would prefer timing rather than points, but frankly, I leave that to the organizers – I am thankful for such a good event being available, and whatever they feel they have the time and ability to do is fine. Timing would provide a lot more incentive to hang in and finish the RR, though, and would make the overall title far more interesting.
Fourth, and this is aimed at Cycling BC, NOT the organizers of this event, waiting a week for the RR results is frankly ridiculous. I appreciate the difficulties when the field gets shattered like in the 4/5/Masters race, but a week???
I just want to say thanks to Sean and his crew for putting on a great weekend of racing. For those complaining about the omnium points, you all knew (or should have known) the points score before the racing started so don’t complain now. That said, I think the RR should carry more weight in the omnium total, but even more importantly I think this is a good stage race to have a timed event (as 2008). It might have made the crit more tactical and less riders will soft-pedal the TT especially if you enforce a time cut.
Regarding safety, I thought things were good with the exception of the cones in the criterium. Cones and bike races do not mix. In the 1/2 race, those cones were flying on a couple of occasions and we are lucky there was not a crash.
Regarding the RR results, this is totally a Cycling BC/commissaire issue and completely out of the hands of Sean and K-town. It is sad that in its 1.5 yr existence the expensive and labour intensive finishline camera is not producing results in a timely and accurate fashion. With the finish on a climb in K-town there is no reason the riders cannot be sorted out quickly. The cost of the timing equipment is being passed along to the race organizers but they in return are not getting good service from cycling BC and the commissaires.
One more thing, Roger makes a good point about the volunteers. Thanks again!! I have been racing for 15 years and organized a few along the way and the number of people it takes to pull off a K-town is not trivial. I tried my best to personally say thanks to as many marshals as I could over the weekend, something we should all make a point of doing at every race we attend. Off soapbox now.
